Pet Health - The Forgotten Sibling of Pet Insurance

Pet health is so often overlooked in our busy lives. While pet insurance is a great way to make sure we can afford whatever operations or procedures our best friends need, often the best answers for an emergency free life can come from keeping the everyday parts of their lives in check.

First off is the food we feed our cats and dogs. One great way to ensure our pets stay healthy is to change the quality of food we feed them. This often comes with a change of price, but considering the negative effects that come as a result of ignoring what we put in their bodies, in the long run you could save that money on vet bills and pet insurance.

Take these small tidbits into account. Cats and dogs do not digest grains very well, and the part of their food that isn't low quality meat is often low quality grains. The one meal fits all mentality we have also doesn't work for them. As many pets get older they start to have joint problems that require supplements in their food to cure. Ask your vet what food they would recommend and remember to try not to switch your animal's food too often or it may lead to digestive problems and an upset animal.

Two other issues often overlooked are mats in fur and cleanliness of paws. Cats are generally cleanly enough to take care of their own paws, but dogs are a different story. A dog's paws are breeding grounds for bacteria and cuts and other sorts of harmful occurrences. To ensure a dog's paws stay clean and well groomed is a sign of a great owner in that it makes sure your pet will be able to continue to stay on its feet as long as it needs to later on in life, a greatly overlooked part of pet health.

The last issue I'll touch on here is fur mats. All I can really say in this area is brush your animal regularly! If you don't feel confident with certain spots, then take your pet in to a groomer. Don't leave it as it will only get worse and often results in having to have it cut out altogether. The more tangled your pet's hair get the more it tugs at its skin, resulting in sores and a great deal of pain. This over the years combined with poor eating habits and battering its paws contribute to a lot of health problems we associate with our pet's old age. Taking these pet health tips in to consideration we can insure our pets have a longer and happier life.

I've made a lot of mistakes over the years with my pets. The worst part about it is that I never knew I was making them until long after the fact, very few of us do. Do you know what mistakes you're making? Come look at my guides on pet insurance at my site and make sure you'll always be there for your pet from this point on.
