Online Pet Heath Offers You Many Alternatives to Explore Easily and Quickly

Online pet health is capable of offering you much more than you can access offline. Often, online pet health practitioners want you to understand a whole new way of looking at health. One that offers you more than is often suggested by the more conventional practitioners.

Let's look at the potential of a good online pet health practitioner can do for you and your pet.

1. Ill health is complicated. Often you are given limited options by your preferred health care practitioner, but the fact is, there is no limit. There are as many options for your pet as there are for humans.

2. All potential causes of your pet's ill health must be examined before an effective solution can be offered. No treatment should ever be offered until a thorough examination of all possible causes has been investigated. This can take time, and an open mind.

3. One of the advantages of online pet health is that it is so easy to compare what different people and different systems do. Although this can be confusing initially, once you recognise that how you feel about each one is probably your most important discerning asset, it becomes much easier.

4. There really has never been, and will probably never be, a human expert on your pet's health. Once you accept that your pet knows far more about what they want than any human ever has, then you will be beginning to understand the best treatment.

Use online pet health information to learn more quickly, to digest the many (and normally conflicting) information. In time, you will know what feels right for both you and your pet. How you feel is more likely to provide you with the best health care, than what the so called experts tell you.

Lessons in Pet Care Are Essential For Kids

Abusive households are not the sole preserve of abusive behaviour towards pets; studies show that it happens too in ordinary non-abusive households. We learn from this that children imitate the behaviour they witness, do not outgrow it, but pass it down to the next generation. Your children will learn how to treat pets and people by watching how you treat the pets and the people in your life.

No detail escapes the attentive eyes of children.

Kids are extremely observant. The way you love and look after your pet will be carefully observed by them. They will pay close attention to how you respond when a pet has an accident, scratches the furniture, chews on your shoes, barks or whines. When pets behave in such ways, adults can become exasperated. As adults, your children will learn how to deal with any problems relating to their pets by seeing how you reacted to similar problems when they were children. If your reaction to a puppy that's misbehaving is not constructive, you will be providing a bad example to your child. This could impact on your child's personality and their relationship with animals as they grow older.

There's a Right Way and There's a Wrong Way.

If your pet is exhibiting undesirable behaviour, then you need to handle it in a constructive manner. Neither your child nor your pet will benefit by your becoming furious; both will feel terror and confusion. Your pets are not insensitive animals, but beings that are capable of feelings and emotions. There are many similarities between animals and people. Pets do not misbehave for no reason. It is your responsibility as a pet owner to get to the root of the problem rather than shouting at your dog for messing on the carpet, for instance. Below are questions you are going to have to think about and take into account in order to figure out why your pet is acting up.

- Are they lounging about too much?
- Are they getting enough attention?
- Are they left at home on their own too often?
- Do they need feeding?
- Are they ill?

How they are behaving may be the result of something quite simple. All possible items have to be considered before you arrive at the true reason. An analysis of the pet's behaviour could lead to a sound diagnosis. You may find that contacting an animal training facility or scheduling obedience training classes will help. If your pet's health appears to have deteriorated as well, don't hesitate to consult your veterinarian. Check the terms of your pet insurance policy too - if your pet has developed a condition for which they will need ongoing treatment, you want to make sure that your pet plan has full lifetime cover.

Don't Give Up

If your pet is misbehaving, do not give up and do not even think about getting rid of your pet. Abandoning the problem - or the pet - is unfair to the pet and your children and is never a satisfactory answer. Every year thousands of pets are discarded by people who find looking after them too difficult. Pets - especially dogs and cats - grow as attached to their family members as we do to them. Giving up with a pet as soon as it needs your support and help is unacceptable. You will not be able to eliminate the problem unless you have first found out the reasons for it. Getting rid of your pet as a result of its bad behaviour won't send the right message to your child about trust, commitment, and responsibility. You should avoid giving your child the idea that a problem is dealt with by running away from it. A child's confidence, social skills, and general maturity have been proven to be increased by caring for a pet.

How to Deal with Problems.

If problems occur with your pets, then it is your responsibility as a pet owner to get to the core of the problem. The problems you are having with your pet's behaviour can usually be sorted out by a veterinarian or other animal professional. Never forget that you are your child's mentor. Your child looks up to you, and will follow your example. Teaching a child how to take proper care of a pet is every parent's responsibility. For example, you need to teach your child how to discipline the animal without physically harming the pet or emotionally abusing it. You should treat your pet in exactly the same way that you would treat your best friend. Their love should be reciprocated. It's important that any misbehaviour by your pet is followed by productive discipline. Children must learn that unacceptable behaviour to other children is equally unacceptable to pets. A pet deserves to be treated with as much respect as a person. If a child becomes abusive to a pet, whether the abuse is intentional or not, the parent needs to speak to the child, explain why it's wrong and then explain the correct way to approach the matter. Providing the basics of food, shelter, pet health care and love need not be difficult or expensive. All the family will benefit emotionally and physically, at the time and later, by having a pet to love and care for.

Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

Believe it or not-but pet insurance is the most claimed-for type of insurance, more so than homeowners or auto insurance. Even so, the whole idea is pretty new to American pet owners. Less than 1 percent of 163 million cats and dogs in the United States are covered by a health insurance policy. In the United Kingdom and other European countries, 20-50 percent of the pet population has coverage.

Consumer Reports Isn't Always Right

Many pet owners wonder if investing in pet insurance is "worth it." An as alternative, some people advise to simply open a separate savings account for your pet's medical expenses. That way, if you don't end up needing the money for expensive vet bills you could spend it on something else-like a vacation to Hawaii.

For example, an article published in 2003 by Consumer Reports says, "The most important thing you need to know about pet insurance is that it is a form of enforced savings that almost never covers the entire bill. You can accomplish the same thing by paying the same monthly premium to your savings account."

I have to disagree that it can accomplish, "the same thing."

Yes, the purpose of any insurance is to cover future unknown risks. But you'll never know which is the better option until after the fact.

Although saving money is always a good idea, how long will it take you to save $3000, $5000, $7000? What if you're faced with a medical emergency and you don't have enough money saved up yet? I can guarantee that your pet isn't going to wait to get sick or injured!

$5000-$7000 is NOT an over-exaggeration of the kind of expenses you might encounter if your pet needs to visit a veterinary specialist or develops a chronic medical condition like diabetes, seizures, or thyroid disease.

Just Punch the Numbers

If you saved $50 a month it would take a little less than 10 years to save $7000 depending on the interest rate for your savings account. Depending on the pet insurance policy you choose, from the first day your policy is effective and for the same $50 a month you could receive $7,000-$14,000 per incident or even $100,000 for multiple lifetime incidents.

Even if by some miracle you have an extra $7,000 laying around to immediately fund your pet's savings account, your savings will be dwindled down to near zero once your pet experiences one serious medical incident. Then what?

Avoid Benefit Schedules

There are many factors to consider when evaluating the different types of pet insurance policies available. But one of the most important is whether or not the company uses a benefit schedule to reimburse claims. What this means is, regardless of the total cost of treatment, the policy will only pay up to a set figure (not a percentage) per condition.

You're much better off looking for a policy that covers a certain percentage of the claim (usually 80% or higher) based on the actual cost of the procedure and where you live. This takes into account the higher fees you're more likely to encounter at an emergency or specialty clinic and you never have to worry about inflation.

Many pet parents have discovered (to their disappointment) that the benefit schedules currently being offered by pet insurance companies have not been adjusted to take into account the recent inflation associated with veterinary expenses.

The fact is, your pet will likely require costly medical care at some point in its life. What would you do if your pet needed sudden medical attention, such as a trip to the emergency clinic, or was diagnosed with a chronic condition such as diabetes?

Both of these could easily cost $2500 or more. Would this cost cause you financial hardship? If you answered yes, then pet insurance would probably be worth it to you.

Some people believe that pet insurance is just another way for insurance companies to get rich. However, any kind of insurance is something that you have--but hope you never need to use. You just never know when you're going to need it. I've seen pet insurance save the lives of pets who otherwise would have been euthanized because of expensive medical bills.

You can't put a price on that.

Are Health Pet Foods Like Royal Canin Any Better For Your Dog

Pets need to be taken care of, especially when it comes to food. The greatest problem being faced is that pets are not being given the right diet. Dogs that have had withheld from them good food may start showing signs of ill health and aging. Pet owners should make sure they buy good quality and wholesome pet food. Royal Canin Dog food is one such company that does full justice to the specific needs of different breeds of dogs like German shepherds, poodles, golden retrievers, and so on. It is imperative that you feed your pet all the essential nutrients.

There are many commercial dog foods that have emerged in the market and that specifically cater to canines. In spite of this, many pet owners prefer preparing homemade food for their canines. Homemade food is undoubtedly the most nutritious ones; however you need to remember that the right quantity of nutrients must be mixed. Pet owners who have a lot of time can probably make their own dog food. But for others, readymade and good quality pet food, which has all the essential nutrients, is the only way.

Dog foods are basically categorised into wet food and dry food. Many amongst us are not quite sure about readymade foods as we feel that these foods may not provide our pets with the essentials required for their development and growth.

It needs to be borne in mind that feeding your pets with a high calorie protein diet is advised and it helps in the overall growth and development of your pet. It does not lead to any health problems, and it can be fed to every dog, irrespective of their age. High protein diets provide the dog with a smooth skin. However, pets with kidney diseases should not be fed a high protein diet as it may lead to further deterioration of your pet's health.

Royal Canin dog food has been suggested by many vets as it provides all the requisite nutrients. A wholesome and well-balanced diet helps in reducing stress levels and increasing immunity levels. It also means preventing frequent trips to the vet. Make sure you do not overfeed your pet high calcium diet as it could lead to health problems for your pooch.

Overfeeding also has many other problems, like damage to joints and bones. Puppies that show quick growth are prone to health problems as they age. Avoid feeding your puppy with adult dog food as it is difficult to digest adult food. Foods rich in carbohydrates like rice and potatoes are not meant for dogs as it could lead to behavioural problems. Substituting proteins for carbohydrates is a good option however.

Including protein-rich food like yogurt, mackerel, egg, meat and cottage cheese are advised. It should be noted that large-sized dogs and adult dogs should be fed with a diet rich is proteins instead of a carbohydrate diet. Dogs have the tendency to overeat if they are fed carbohydrates and it could lead to lethargy.

VioVet is one of the largest stockist of Royal Canin Dog Food diets.

There are spas that are fancier than human spas. You can swim, sauna, run, jump play and then enjoy a gourmet meal and rest in a luxurious pet bed or especially prepared sofa or chair.

And of course, today, there is doggie day care, just like camp for children. These little doggies can play with their peers, tire themselves out and then go home and be ready to sleep the rest of the evening. This gives mom and dad a break.

Pet health is very important to all kinds of pets today, not just dogs, cats, horses and birds. Today, people love their hamsters, lizards, iguanas, snakes, bats, rats and spiders. Common Cat Health Problems That All Pet Owners Should Know

If you have a cat or are planning on getting a kitten, you should be ready to provide it with a good environment that will allow it to be secure and healthy. Like any other pets, cats too are vulnerable to various diseases. These include arthritis, heart problems, eye diseases and asthma. You will need to take care of your pet the same way as you take care of a child. Let us take a look at some common cat health problems so that you can take the necessary steps to treat them.

Cats generally have excellent vision that enables them to see in the dark. However they can suffer from several eye problems such as glaucoma, cataract, and cherry eye. Cats may also injure their corneas if they get involved in cat fights. Cats suffering from glaucoma squint too much, and you will also see that their eyes are becoming more tearful. These cats would be too sensitive to light. Cataracts cause a white lens that has a bit of yellowish tint. Cherry eye causes the gland of a cat's eye to become more protruding. This is a genetic disease most common in Burmese and Persian cats.

Cats can also develop various hearing problems. Tumors and inner infections might cause it to lose hearing. If your cat loses its balance and coordination often and has less appetite, there is a good chance that it is suffering from an inner or middle ear infection. Go to a vet immediately if you spot these cat health problems. Many white cats are deaf by birth. This is something that you might want to consider before adopting.

A cat suffering from diabetes can have excess thirst and can also pass more urine than usual. However this symptom may also mean that your pet is suffering from renal failure. It might be a good idea to check if it is having problems while urinating. If so, then its kidneys may have got damaged.

Cats can also suffer from arthritis and hip dysplasia. If your cat is having trouble walking or if there is any stiffness in its walk, then it is possible that it has arthritis. Talk to a vet and take an x-ray to treat the problem.

It's important that all current and potential pet owners know about some common cat health problems and symptoms as these would help them care for their kitties better. Have fun with your kitty!

How to Keep Pets Safe During the Holidays

Ah, the holidays! Such a glorious time of year, filled with happy anticipation and joyous reunions with family and friends you haven't seen for a while.

Unfortunately, the holidays can spell disaster for our four-legged family members. Thousands of pets sustain injuries from holiday plants, decorations and foods at this time of the year.

Help Fido and Fluffy celebrate the season safely by protecting them from these holiday pet health hazards:

* Mistletoe, holly, poinsettias and Christmas lilies all make lovely holiday decorations but are all toxic to pets when ingested. Mistletoe causes gastrointestinal and cardiovascular problems. Holly and poinsettias can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and lethargy.

* When using holiday plants to decorate your dining table, move them to a location where pets can't reach between mealtimes. Hang mistletoe where pets can't reach it; berries are highly poisonous, and highly attractive to cats. Don't allow pets to remain in the room with your Christmas tree without supervision. Even eating a few pine needles can cause a puncture in pet intestines!

* Tape down or otherwise secure electrical cords for holiday lights to prevent chewing on them and unplug tree lights before leaving home.

* Secure your Christmas tree to the ceiling to keep it from falling on pets. Don't let pets drink water from the tree holder. Even fresh water can contain fertilizer residue, and stagnant water is full of bacteria. If you use tree water preservative, be sure to buy one that's labeled non-toxic in case pets decide to quaff while you're not looking. And NEVER use aspirin as a preservative in tree water. Ingesting aspirin-laced water can cause serious illness and even death.

* Keep tinsel and other ornaments well out of pet range. Cats in particular like to play with tinsel, and some will eat it, which can block intestines. Pets can mistake ornaments for toy balls to pets, and shards from broken glass ornaments can cause injury to mouths and paws. Swallowed, they cause major injuries to stomach and intestinal tract.

* If pets persist in trying to play with ornaments, blow up a few balloons and hang on lower branches and stick around until your dog or cat snares one. The sharp sound of even one balloon breaking is often enough to convince even the most determined pet to leave tree decorations alone.

* Once gifts have been opened, have children put their new toys away, especially those with small parts that can cause choking and intestinal blockage in dogs and frequently need to be removed surgically.

* Most pets love snoozing on a warm hearth. Always use fireplace screens, even when you think the fire is completely out. Keep candles out of pet reach and extinguish when leaving the room.

* To reduce stress, maintain pets' routines. Walk your dog as you always do. Serve pets' meals at regular times. Make sure fresh water is always available for them.

* Remember that holiday foods that are fine for people can make pets seriously ill. Macadamia nuts can cause muscular weakness, depression, vomiting, disorientation, tremors, abdominal pain and muscle stiffness in dogs. Chocolate can be fatal; ingesting as little as 1/4 ounce can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, hyperactivity and increase thirst, urination and heart rate.

* Call your veterinarian immediately if you think your pet may have ingested something toxic. If unable to reach your vet call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center's 24-hour emergency hotline at 1-888-4-ANI-HELP.

Pet Health Care Costs

One of the biggest things to keep in mind before deciding to purchase an animal is going to be the pet health care costs you'll be facing. These costs differ dramatically between different types of pets and different situations. For instance, there's probably no comparing the most dire medical costs for a hamster to even the most basic health costs of a horse. While we'd all like nothing more than for our pets to be entirely healthy and happy for all the years of their lives, we must operate under the assumption that something serious inevitably will happen, and that in such an event, we, as owners, must be willing to pay the resulting veterinary costs. So what kind of up front costs can you expect? What should you be prepared for? Read on to have your questions answered.

As you make your pet purchasing decisions, ask yourself how much pet health care cost you're prepared to deal with. If your answer is "not very much," it's probably best to invest in a lower budget animal such as a goldfish or betta fish or a small mammal like a hamster or mouse. This is not to say that these animals will have perfect health and will never need to see the vet, but the likelihood of a fish or hamster incurring hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of medical care is slim. Unlike dogs, cats, or horses, a fish or small mammal doesn't require yearly vaccinations or check-ups. If you're on a budget, avoid any animal that's considered "exotic" such as reptiles, amphibians, and exotic birds like parrots. Many times, these animals require special, difficult to find vets who charge more for their expertise. Research and plan before you buy!

While you may not have any up-front health costs for a hamster, fish, or other small animal, you have to consider the fact that your pet may take ill at some point. For fish, one of your biggest concerns will be a disease called Ich, which can be treated with a $10 bottle of solution from the pet store. For hamsters, mice, and other rodents, home-diagnosis is usually tricky, so a trip to the vet will be necessary. Most vets charge a flat fee for an office visit-that is, just for bringing your animal into the exam room. This fee varies from vet to vet, but expect to pay anywhere between $30 and $70 just for the visit, plus extra for whatever medication your pet might require.

For larger or more exotic animals, your pet health care costs will inevitably increase. Puppies and kittens alike must have 3 or 4 rounds of booster shots in their first few months of life. Depending on your vet, this set of vaccinations can run anywhere from $50 to $100. After the booster shots, your cat or dog will need a check up, vaccination, and rabies shot every year for the rest of their life. On top of that, you'll need to have your dog or cat spayed or neutered around the age of 6 months. The cost of spaying or neutering depends upon the type of animal, and upon the animal's gender. As spaying is far more invasive than neutering, it's naturally going to be more expensive, and since dogs are generally larger than cats, the cost will be greater for dogs. Expect to pay between $50 and $100 to have a cat altered and between $70 and $200 to have a dog altered. Some cities offer low-cost spay/neuter clinics where you can get a considerably reduced-cost surgery--a feline neutering could be as little as $15 at a low-cost clinic!

As much as you don't want to think about it, you must also factor potential major illnesses or emergency situations into your pet planning. A basic broken bone can rack up a bill around $1,000 for a dog or cat. A major internal surgery and stay at the vet could cost you upwards of $2000. Treatment for a chronic illness such as cancer could have you looking at numbers in the $1,000's as well. Some animals may develop conditions that require daily medication, in which case you'll have monthly costs to contend with that could be from $25 for a basic medication on up. For horses or other larger animals, add another zero to each of these cost estimates.

While owning a pet should never be reduced to a matter of numerical figures, the reality of pet health care costs must be dealt with before you bring an animal into your home. You owe it to yourself to be fiscally responsible, but moreover, you owe it to the living creature who is going to be depending on you for its every need.

Tips For Buying Pet Insurance Online

It is important to protect your pet. They are more than just an investment, but a member of your family. To do so it is prudent to purchase pet insurance. Buying pet insurance online can be simple and rewarding if a few simple rules and advisements are followed.

One

What kind of animal is your pet? Various websites specialize in insurance for certain pets. Find the website that deals with your pet specifically, whether its dog, cat, or even snake. Be aware that some types of pet insurance require certain discretions, such as a leash on a dog.

Two

How old is your pet? Age matters. Some insurers offer higher rates and lower premiums for pets that are nearing their life expectancy. If this is the case, look around for the insurer with the lowest rates, but make sure they're not fraudulent. Also, be sure to have the correct measurement of years. Dog years, for example, are not the same as human years.

Three

What do you need? As a vigilante for prices, you need to find the lowest price. However, the top priority when buying online pet insurance should be the coverage you receive. Look carefully at the plan, and determine what your pet needs. If your pet had any or has any existing medical conditions, it is paramount that you report this, or should an accident happen, coverage may be nullified. Also, assess the risk of certain occurrences. If you live in a busy neighborhood, the chances of an accident occurring are generally higher, so make sure your plan accounts for that.

Four

Make payments on time. Payment is extremely important not to forget. Probably, paying pet insurance is not at the top of your to-do list. There are many other charges that need attention when it comes to financial dues. Make regular payments, because forbid something should happen, if you have no made payments you may or may not be eligible for coverage at the time.

Buying pet insurance online can be a deflating experience. To protect your personal or family companion it can be well worth it. Just follow these simple steps. Make sure you get a great price, consider all factors in health and age, and above all; make sure you are well covered!

Essential Considerations for Your Dog's Health

If you have recently gotten a new dog or are considering to own, there are several aspects in relation to caring for a pet's health that should be considered. Dogs need to be fed the right kind of food; they need exercise; they need vaccines and preventative treatments; they need to be groomed; and they need to have proper dental care. Here is a short overview of the most important health aspects to consider when owning a pet:

First of all, a healthy diet goes a long way! If your pet is being fed table scraps or dry food that is primarily composed of vegetable and grain, you may want to reconsider Fido's diet. If your dog is often being fed "people" food from the dinner table, it can easily cause obesity. Dogs metabolisms and organs do not function just like humans do, dogs require special diets and food types to thrive...human food does not simply cut it. Also, dogs thrive on diets that consist of high protein and low vegetable and grain levels. Dogs are classified omnivores; that means they thrive on meat and vegetable diets. However, recent research strongly supports the theory that dog foods that are high in protein are more beneficial to pets. Talk to your local vet and they will help you find the best food choice for your dog.

Dogs also need exercise. Some dogs need more physical activity than others, depending on their breed. Be aware of your dog's physical activity requirements and stick to them. If your dog's breed needs a lot of exercise, give it to them! Keeping your pet healthy and happy should always be a top priority.

Next, dogs need vaccines and preventative treatments. Talk to your vet to find out what vaccines your dog needs (it sometimes varies on where you live or your dog's breed), and make sure your pet gets vaccinated. Most dogs will also need heart worm treatments and flea and tick preventive treatments- several of these are applied topically between the shoulder blades.

Another important aspect of your dog's health is simple grooming. Keep your dog clean; give him a bath regularly, brush his coat frequently and trim his nails. Many local pet supply stores offer grooming services, so you can shop while Fido is at the spa. Also, in many towns there are mobile pet grooming services that does home service and will drop by your home and groom your pet in their clean and safe mobile facility.

Finally, good dental health is always important not just for people! Buy your dog a doggie toothbrush and toothpaste (often sold at supply stores) and learn to brush your dog's teeth. Dry dog food also aids in the reduction of plaque and tartar on the teeth and gums as well. There are also special chew toys that are designed to aid in keeping teeth clean as well.

As you adjust to your new dog or consider getting one, your pet's health should always be a priority. A healthy pet makes for a happy pet!

Caring For Your Pet in the Winter

Some pet owners forget that a change in season brings about changes in the needs of their pets. That added precaution during the cold winter months will prevent any last minute problems that could spoil the Christmas holidays. Because of the constant flurry of activity, we tend to overlook some essentials in "prepping" our pet for winter. Here are a few pointers to bear in mind.

Basic Pet Care for Winter

Not all dogs like being outside in the winter. Pet owners make the mistake of shooing their dogs outdoors thinking that they enjoy themselves better when they are allowed to roam outside. Unless your dog is specifically a "winter breed", pet experts recommend they be kept inside when temperatures fall drastically. Dogs don't need to stay out in fresh cold air for extended periods; what they need most is to spend a lot of time with humans. When separated from people for long periods of time, they develop behavioural problems.

To ensure your pet is healthy for the winter season, check for hypothermia if they have spent an extended period of time outdoors in cold weather, or even if they are indoors in a cold house. Signs that your pet may be suffering from hypothermia are trembling or shivering, gums that are pale, unusually large pupils, a very slow heart rate and a body temperature that is 95 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.

Go ahead and provide your pet with warm clothing like coats or booties. Your friends may laugh at you for going to such great lengths, but a rule of thumb is to treat your pet the way you would another human being when it comes to cold temperatures. Offer something to keep them warm.

Make sure you keep a supply of clean rags or old towels near the door for when your pet comes in after spending some time outside. You need to rub them down and dry them thoroughly. Remember that there are chemicals and substances on the ground that people put to melt the snow. Some of these substances can harm your pet. Check for residues that get stuck in between the toes of your pets and be on the lookout for frostbite.

On the subject of exercise, pet owners like to give their dogs a good workout in cold weather. If you plan on doing this, make sure that your dog is fit as a fiddle. If you like to run, start at a moderate pace. Most dogs will continue running even if they're tired just to keep up with their master so don't push them to the limit. In the absence of outdoor exercise, you can play ball indoors by letting your dog pick up the ball at both ends of a long corridor. Or take him for a long ride in the car and arrange for play dates.

If you have a cat, winter is the best time to train it to adapt to the indoors. One way to do this is to change the location of its food bowl every day such that the bowl is put farther away from the door each time your cat comes in. As soon as your feline has grown accustomed to being inside, provide entertainment - don't overlook this. Consider installing a bird-feeder outdoors, in a location where you cat can watch from inside. According to one writer, a bird-feeder to a cat is like TV to a human!

Your Pet's House

If your dog will be spending time in his own house in the winter, the house should have sufficient space for your pet to stand up and turn around, but no more. The house should be constructed in such a way that it does not face the wind directly. It must also be a few inches from the ground to avoid moisture from accumulating. The door must be well-insulated to keep ice and snow out. If you're going away for the holidays, pets should be checked in every day; make arrangements for a relative or friend to make daily visits.

Pet Health Insurance

To many people, their pets are members of their families. They want to be able to care for their health in the same way they would any other family member.

Pet health insurance can help you afford the very best wellness care for your cat or dog, as well as to be prepared for the unexpected emergency visit. Pet health insurance plans can take care of your pet's needs from accident and illness only, to complete wellness care such as annual checkups, vaccinations, and flea and heartworm preventative medication.

The idea of health care insurance coverage for household pets has been around for awhile now. As technological advances in the world of veterinary medicine increase the availability of human level diagnostics and health care to animals, many pet owners find themselves in the heartbreaking position of not being able to afford the care their pet needs. Unlike the world of human health care, there is no government health care plan ready to step in and provide that care.

Just like human health care insurance, pet health care insurance pays for veterinary care and often for prescription medication as well. The cost of pet insurance will vary based on what is covered by the health care policy. Some pet insurance policies will include coverage for annual vaccinations for your dog or cat. Other policies do not cover these routine medical expenses and are there in case your pet suffers a catastrophic illness or injury.

As with human health care insurance, pet insurance pays the health care provider, in this case the veterinarian, according to a schedule worked out by the insurance company. Before you sign up for pet insurance, it is a good idea to make sure your veterinarian accepts the insurance you are considering. You may want to ask your vet for a recommendation. Pet insurance is becoming more and more common, so there is a good chance the staff at your veterinary hospital has at least a passing familiarity with the various pet insurance programs offered in your area.

Also consider the deductible you are required to pay before the pet insurance kicks in. Of course, the higher the deductible, the lower the cost of the insurance policy.

Natural Dog Food is Great For Pet Health

The last decade has seen numerous recalls in pet foods from across the globe. There are many pet owners in general that are concerned with pet health concerning their animal's food intake and many are now turning to making their own food for their pets. One of the more popular pets that are being targeted with home made food are dogs, who tend to have an easy transition from the store bought feed to those meals made with the love of their owner. Although it may sound difficult at first, there are many easy and simple recipes for one to create, and what a better way to ease your mind that to know that what your animal is eating is one hundred percent natural, containing no additives or preservatives.

What Types of Foods Should I Use

As anyone who has ever watched a dog beg for food will know, dogs are generally not very picky when it comes to foods he or she will eat. This is why making one's own dog food is easier than other animals in general. By following a few guidelines, you will be on your way to making a wholesome and nutritious meal for your favorite canine pet. First, you want to make sure that you are balancing your meals, and the best way to do that is to include a source of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. It is also not a bad idea to use a mineral and vitamin supplement although this is not necessary if you create a balanced mixture. When choosing vegetables, it is best to stay away from foods such as spinach, chard, and other vegetables that contain the chemical oxalic acid, which interferes with calcium absorption. Some options you may have when choosing your foods are many.

Oats

Whole Wheat

Rice (brown)

Millet

Green Beans (cut)

Corn

Lamb

Poultry

Beef

These are just a few ingredients you may choose when finding the right vegetables, carbohydrates, and meats to feed your pet. One thing to keep in mind when making your own dog food is that you need to cook most of your ingredients first. Raw vegetables need to be softened for better digestion and obviously grains such as rice and oats are almost impossible even for a dog to eat unless cooked.

Make the Transition Slowly

It is a good idea to not completely switch your dog's food all at once. As one may know, dogs are creatures of habit and when he or she gets used to one particular food, they may be a bit reluctant to switch. A good idea is to take their traditional food and begin to mix the home made creation in a little per meal. This will not only allow the dog to get used to the taste, but will also help their body adjust as well. A change in dry or processed food to whole food can sometimes cause problems with initial digestion. However, pet symptoms is contingent on a balanced diet and what better a way to make sure you have a happy and healthy canine that making their food wholesome, with an added bit of love.

Health Care For Your Pet Dog

Are you preparing to bring a dog into your life? If you are, one of your biggest dog care considerations and responsibilities will undoubtedly be your new pet's health. So what does optimum dog health entail? What can you do to ensure that your dog remains happy and healthy for as long as possible? How do you find the right vet for your dog? Hopefully this basic pet dog health care primer will get you started on the road to keeping your best friend by your side for years to come.

Your dog's optimum health begins at home with quality food, plenty of exercise, and love. You need to tailor your dog's diet to its specific needs. For instance, is your dog a puppy? Puppies have very specific nutritional needs to support them as they grow, so be sure that you're feeding your puppy a dry puppy food formulated especially for a growing dog's needs. On the other hand, if you have a dog over seven years old, you'll want to consider a dry food geared specifically towards older dogs. Whatever your dog's age, be sure you're feeding a top-notch food offering primary ingredients such as lamb, rice, chicken, or beef rather than so-called "value" foods made with fillers such as corn, meat by-products, and ingredients with unrecognizable names.

Now that you've got your dog eating right, give him a chance to work up an appetite with daily exercise. A lot of people think that letting their dog out into the backyard to run around qualifies as exercise, and for some smaller dogs, that may be enough. For a more active, larger dog, however, daily walks, trips to the dog park, and hard play sessions may be a pet dog health care necessity. A lot of dogs thrive when they have a "job" to do be it herding sheep, running an agility course, or pulling a sled. Think creatively and explore different avenues to see what sort of activity your dog might enjoy. To double your fun and make friends, see if you can't find a fellow dog owner or two to get involved right alongside you.

Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to pet dog care and health is operating under the impression that it's okay to have an "outdoor dog." Loneliness and exposure to the elements are both detriments to your dog's mental and physical health, and keeping a dog outside is the fastest way to ensure that your dog is both of these things. Common arguments for the outdoor dog include "my dog is too big to live in the house" and "he'll destroy the furniture." The truth is, no dog is too large to live in the house, and most dogs would much rather lie quietly at your feet than wreak havoc on your possessions. Dogs are den animals by nature, and, in that same vein, are also pack animals. Your house is your dog's den, and you are your dog's pack leader. Therefore, when you sentence your dog to a lonely existence in the backyard, you're essentially exiling your dog from its dent and its pack. That's why so many backyard-dogs bark constantly, dig, or become aggressive, which in turn leads to being dumped at the animal shelter.

As your dog's pack leader, you're responsible for finding a veterinarian you can trust with your dog's health needs. In the very least, your dog will need his yearly vaccinations and wellness check up. A complete set of vaccinations is particularly crucial for puppies who are extremely susceptible to deadly diseases such as parvovirus and distemper, but all dogs should receive their yearly vaccines. You'll want to choose a vet who will treat your dog as his or her own pet and who will treat you with respect and compassion by thoroughly and patiently answering any pet dog health care questions you might have. The best way to find such a vet is to ask around for recommendations from other dog owners, reputable breeders, or your local animal shelter. Dogs are known for their unconditional, unending loyalty and love. While we may never be fully deserving of such devotion, a bowlful of good food, a home full of love and attention, and expert medical care goes a long way in saying "thank you" each and every day.

Pet Health Insurance - What to Consider Before Purchasing Pet Medical Insurance?

Pet health insurance is not a new idea. It has been available for more than 20 years. But there are still some people that find pet health insurance is still relatively new.

Currently, there are many options. While some pet owners are doubtful, some fear that adding insurance to veterinary medicine will follow the path of insurance red tape and problems found in human health care fields.

Pet health care policies are in some ways similar to human insurance policies. There are annual premiums, deductibles and different coverage plans based on what the owner chooses. Plans are based on species, age, pre-existing conditions and in some cases, even upon the lifestyle of the pet.

According to some experts, the best time to purchase pet insurance is when the animal is still young. Many pet health insurance plans do not cover pre- existing conditions. Insuring early can also provide coverage for certain initial veterinary procedures such as vaccinations and spaying.

When looking for a pet health insurance, consider the company stability. Even if pet health insurance has been available for more than 25 years and has grown to become a strong industry, there are few companies who have been on the market for a while. So, when shopping for pet insurance, do your research about the insurance company. Know how long it has been in business and if it is financially solid.

Make sure that the company has in-depth veterinary knowledge. A quality pet health insurance provider should have knowledge of the veterinary and insurance industries. It should have trained veterinary professionals on their staff. It pays if your veterinarian actually recommends the pet health insurance.

When looking for a pet health insurance, check for the wellness coverage. Preventive care is important for the long-term health of the pet. In order to encourage and remind pet owners to take their pet to the vet on a regular basis, there are pet insurance plans offering coverage for common preventive treatments and procedures like wellness exams, vaccinations, heartworm protection, neutering, teeth cleaning, prescription flea control and many more.

Aside from wellness coverage, also check the broad coverage for illnesses. Policies should include coverage for prescription drugs, dental illness, allergies and diabetes. Also check if your pet has insurance coverage even if it is away from home. A good pet insurance should cover your pet no matter where you are.

Also check if it is possible to have your own veterinarian. Some pet owners would rather have their own veterinarian including veterinary specialists such as oncologists, neurologists, and allergists.

If pet health insurance is not for you and your pet, there are other options that you can choose from to keep your pet healthy.

You can check with your veterinarian. There are some hospitals that offer wellness packages. They offer discount prices on vaccinations, spay/neuters and similar medical attention. Some even have geriatric health check up packages you can check on.

Discount programs like Pet Assure is another option. This national program offers 25 percent savings on veterinary services. They can sometimes offer as much as 50 percent on pet supplies. They have a network of participating veterinarians and pet vendors where you can take advantage of their services and discounts.

Some human and non-profit organizations offer financial aid to pet owners. Some veterinary offices even keep an emergency fund for pets in the event they have an emergency situation. But even if there is an option like this, pet owners should still primarily provide or cover financial cost brought about by emergency situations.

Pet health insurance is something that can help pet owners provide the best possible care for their pets in time of need.

However, health insurance is not the only option that pet owners have. Still the most important thing is tender loving care.

Keeping Pets Healthy Takes a Total Approach

Keeping pets is not just about housing and feeding them as their health is defined in more ways than that. Of course, most pet owners would resort to a vet in any health threatening cases for their pets but all good owners must be prepared to tackle situations on their own in emergencies. Hence, no matter what the pet, it is good practise to obtain any pet medication or tools from vets as well as advice on using them as you never know when your dog might get into a fight with a stray or your cat get some bad injuries while exploring some rough areas.

For the concerned pet owner nowadays, pet care products such as grooming products, pet medication and tools of aid are easily available online. This is useful as you can have a greater insight of what products there are available instead of when shopping at a vet or a pet store where you can only analyze the available stock of products. Usually, good sites will provide lots of tips and advice to go along with the products that they are selling, some of them which can make you a better pet owner than you already are. Your pets will definitely say yes to that if they could speak.

When having pets, it is always important to consider their wellbeing when travelling away from home. The first obvious decision to make is whether to bring the pet along or to leave it at home. Naturally, you would have to get someone to help take care of it should you leave it at home and you always need to analyze all the circumstances you need to adhere to if you are travelling with it. Either way requires a similar preparation which is to have enough food, common pet meds in case of emergencies or accidents, any relevant tools, kits or toys to keep the pet occupied and so forth.

Choosing Pet Health Insurance

With the escalating costs of health care for pets, pet health insurance is becoming more popular. The most difficult questions that face dog owners are...

Which insurance provider should I choose.
Which plan offers the best coverage for my dog?
Will having pet health insurance save me money?

Let's take a closer look at these questions. I'll try to provide you with some insight as well as answers.

Choosing A Pet Insurance Provider

A search online will yield dozens of companies and organizations that offer health care for your pets. Many offer very similar coverage options and monthly premiums. Not all are reliable when it comes time to pay the bill. You will have to really do your homework before deciding on a provider.

The first thing you need to know is exactly how pet health insurance works. It is not the same as health insurance for people. With pet insurance you'll need to pay the medical bill yourself at the time of service. Only then can you submit the bill to the insurance provider for reimbursement. The amount you are reimbursed by the insurance company varies. It is usually between 80 and 90 percent of the total bill.

When it comes to health insurance for your pet, every individuals circumstances are unique. This makes it impossible for me to say exactly which provider is best for you. As I said, you'll need to do a little research on your own.

I can recommend the pet health care insurer that I use myself. I carry the pet insurance offered by the ASPCA. They offer several affordable plans and your dog is covered anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. The annual deductible for all of their plans is only $100 and they reimburse 80% of the total bill.

Their level 1 plan covers only accidents and in my opinion offers the least value.

The level 2 plan covers;

Accidents
Hospitalizations
X-Rays
Surgery
IllnessesThe level three plan adds additional coverage for;

Spaying and Neutering
Standard Vaccines
Annual Physical ExamThe level 4 plan, which I have, also includes coverage for;

Heartworm Prevention
Annual Dental Cleaning
Advanced VaccinesThere is also optional coverage available to cover ongoing illnesses, like diabetes treatment and other long-term illnesses.

In the end the choice of insurance provider is up to you. Just do some research to find the one right for you and your dog. The main thing is having the peace of mind knowing your dog is always covered.

As to the question of whether or not pet insurance will save you money, the only answer I can give is "Maybe". The whole reason for having pet health insurance, as I said, is for peace of mind. If, heaven forbid, your dog is seriously injured or falls ill, it could save you thousands of dollars.

Hopefully your dog will live a happy injury and illness free life. In that case having pet health insurance will save you nothing. The one thing to keep in mind when deciding to have it or not, is "what if?".

Guinea Pig Health - Simple Tips to Keep Your Guinea Pig Happy

Although they make great pets that seem to be easy to take care there are things you should be aware of that affect guinea pig health. Diet, your pet guinea pig's habitat, exercise, and other factors all determine how healthy your cavy will stay.

To start with, your cavy needs lots of vitamin C, which just like in humans, isn't produced naturally by their body. Most people choose the option of adding vitamin c drop or tables to their pet guinea pigs water. This changes the taste of their water and can actually have two detrimental effects. First, they will drink less water due to the bad taste, and secondly, they won't receive the needed vitamin c.

To fix this you should feed your guinea pigs fresh, green, leafy vegetables daily along with the regular "guinea pig food" pellets that you can purchase from a local pet supply store. Vegetable like kale and romaine lettuce have plenty of vitamin c and they will do much to maintain guinea pig health. They will love the variety of different green food and see it as a treat. This can be a little bonding ritual you do with pet that will build trust.

Since their teeth and claws grow constantly they will require a gnawing stick and frequent nail clippings. If left unchecked long claws can really affect the health of your guinea pig by picking up dirty material from their cage and digging in to their paws. You can use a fruit tree branch as a gnawing stick or buy an untreated wooden block from a pet store.

For the mental and emotional health of your pet guinea pig consider owning more than two or three. Since they are herd animals, the more guineas that live and play together the more natural of an environment they will be in. Keep in mind that males may try to compete for dominance. Unfixed cavies will most likely lead to a quick multiplying of your herd as well. Gentle handling, plenty of exercise, the proper diet, and a safe, clean habitat will keep your pet guinea pigs healthy and happy for years to come.

Reduce Stress and Improve Health - The Pet Benefits

Playing with pets may not seem like a great key to success. It is a great key to reducing stress and increasing relaxation. Surprisingly playing with dogs or cats or both can be very healthy!

How can pets help?

Pets provide a non-judgmental relationship. They love you for who you are without requesting you change. Although cats do appreciate you changing, their cat litter that is. But dog, cat, or other pet there are responsibilities, and these responsibilities can provide an outlet as well.

Why are more responsibilities good?

They pass no judgment, but they love you and provide companionship. Dogs may require walking, but it forces you to exercise. You need to play with pets. This results in you relaxing and enjoying the moment rather than focusing on things that may add stress to your life.

Do you need more love?

We all need more love. In a family, everyone can help share the responsibilities of a pet. A pet can be enjoyed by all and help everyone feel more in touch. The pet can be part of family activities and playing with a pet can become a family activity. This special time with a pet with or without the family helps improve your attitude and self-esteem. Spending time petting and cuddling with your pet is allows you to reduce stress and feel more relaxed.

How can pets improve self-esteem?

A pet can help improve your self-esteem and health in a variety of ways. The companionship and non-judgmental behavior of pets allows you to relax and feel confident in what you do. The companion nature of pets helps people to not feel alone, because sometimes even when you are with other people you may feel alone.

How does a pet help with health?

A pet helps with health by allowing you to relax. This action has been shown to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Often disease is more of a case of dis-ease. A pet provides comfort and eases what you feel. A pet gives you love and you feel more love this increases your happy endorphins which improves your health.

What if I do not have pets?

You may have friends or family that have pets. Ask if you can pet sit, or ask if you can spend time with the pet. Many people understand the need to spend time with pets and will share. Recently places to rent pets or places to spend time with pets have started appearing around the world.

Have you looking into volunteering?

You can also volunteer at a local shelter or other place with pets and spend a bit of time with the pets there. Plus the volunteer work will further boost your esteem as helping provides natural endorphins just like pets. Helping with the pets and volunteering is a double helping of you socially, mentally and emotionally. Volunteering and pets help improve your blood pressure and cholesterol so this is a win/win situation.

How To Save Money With Pet Insurance

With all of the new treatment options available for your pets now days and with these treatments continuing to push veterinarian bills through the roof, pet insurance is an option that more and more pet owning are considering and are using to save significant amounts of money.

It seems like it was just a few years ago that pet insurance would have been ranked with taking policies out on children and having dreaded disease coverage. It just didn't seem important enough to buy. However, now the trend seems to be reversing itself.

There are some thoughts out there that people would be better off foregoing pet insurance and putting the money they would spend on those dreaded premiums into a savings account. You are looking at spending from $2,000 to $6,000 on pet insurance when you consider the average age of a pet these days. Chances are very slim that you would ever have to spend that kind of money on veterinarian bills over the life of your pet.

Or would you, over a pet lifespan that is probably 10 years or more?

However, there are many people out there who treat their pets just like family. They would do anything to save their pet, and that would include spending big bucks on medical treatments. In this instance, then, pet insurance would likely be the better alternative rather than going into debt.

What have changed in the last several years are the new tests and treatment options that are available today in the field of veterinary science. Vets today can offer treatments that were never heard of a few years ago and at prices that go through the roof! Consider these following therapies that are now available for pets:

* Treatments that were once only reserved for humans, to everything from radiation therapy to kidney transplants, are now available for your pets. These conditions which were once regarded as fatal are now treatable at costs ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 and more.

* Veterinarians now have access to costly diagnostic and sophisticated tools such as MRIs. These screenings can not only boost the cost of the medical exam, but they can often find problems that would have once gone untreated.

* These expensive procedures and tools have created health-care inflation in regards to the pet doctor world.

This inflation has seen a very significant rise in those people that are now taking out pet insurance. It is now estimated that approximately 5% of pet owners in the United Sates have pet insurance. This has risen from less than 1% in 1995. Pet insurers have joined forces with the American Kennel Club and with Petco Animal Supplies to offer pet insurance. Some major employers now provide pet insurance as one of their optional employee benefits.

Veterinary Pet Insurance, which is the oldest pet insurance company, has seen a steady increase in its revenues by a 40% annual rate since 1997. This is the year it finally broke even after about 15 straight years in the red.

You will still have to consider the following if you want to take out pet insurance:

* Most of the pet insurance policies have co-pays, deductibles and caps that will put a limit on how much will be paid out in the course of a year.

* Some pre-existing problems and conditions that are hereditary such as hip dysplasia in retrievers and German shepherds are normally excluded.

* The older your animal gets, the more you will have to pay in premiums. Some pet insurance companies will not insure a pet older than 9 years old, while other companies levy a hefty surcharge.

Pet Health Insurance - General Information On Pet Health Insurance

Purchasing pet health insurance can help save you a lot of money on veterinary bills during your pet's lifetime. It is estimated that one in three pets need veterinary treatment each year. Here are some general information on pet health insurance.

Pet Health Insurance and Veterinary Care

Pet insurance does not pay for preventive veterinary care or elective veterinary care. Veterinary costs have sky rocketed and even a simple problem can cost you thousands of dollars to fix. Depending on the treatment needed, the cost can leave the you with huge veterinary bills.

Pet Health Insurance Coverage

The idea of health care insurance coverage for household pets has been around for awhile now. The same fees, deductibles, coverage rates and plans are all in place. Different plans are based on the age, species, and general health of your pet.

Like human healthcare plans emergency coverage begins right away, but you might have to wait a month or so for the other benefits to kick in.

If you are looking for pet insurance to provide cover for routine treatments such as teeth cleaning, vaccinations or nail trimming: forget it. Policies which provide that are very rare.

Pet Health Insurance Policy

Pet insurance is similar to a health policy. If the pet is ill or injured, then the pet is cared for by the vet and claims are sent to the policy provider for disbursements. The policy assists the owners financially, thus saving them steep expenses when visiting the veterinarian. Generally a pet insurance policy pays for unexpected illness, accidents, injuries, or some other emergency.

Pet Sitter's Insurance Policies

Pet sitters and dog walkers around the world are coming to see that it is essential to their business (whether part-time or full-time) to have pet sitter's insurance. The insurance industry has risen to the occasion and now offers policies to those who care for pets.

Pet Health Insurance Companies

There are many companies that offer pet health insurance and you should ask your veterinarian what companies he or she recommends. Pet insurance is currently offered by several different companies in North America.

By doing a simple Google search, you may find companies that provide pet insurance online. If you have more than one pet to insure, many online companies will often offer discounts for multiple pets.

Pet Health Insurance and Pet Illness

Pet health insurance plans can take care of your pet's health needs such as annual checkups, vaccinations and heartworm preventative medication.

Basic accident plans don't cover expenses related to illness or disease.

A number of leading pet insurance providers now offer pet owners travel pet insurance. This can give pet owners the comfort of knowing that their pet will be insured against any illness or mishap that may occur while they are away from home.

Would you be able to find the cash for major veterinary work should your pet be in desperate need for it? If your answer is no, then you might consider pet health insurance.

Veterinarians and Pet Groomers - Help the Health of Your Animals and Your Profits

Whether you are a veterinarian or a pet groomer the following ideas could prove very beneficial not only for the health of the animals for which you care, but also for your bottom line business profits. There are several categories, so let us touch on each:

1. Pet Preventive Dental Health. Veterinarians are keenly aware of the importance for the need for good pet oral care. Pet teeth cleaning is a regular part of virtually all veterinary practices. But, how many veterinarians and groomers emphasize preventive oral care AND provide the tools and products that offer a solution to the problem. Dental disease continues to be a leading health concern in both dogs and cats over the age of two. Many pets lose a number of their teeth by age 10 and develop other diseases related to bacterial infections caused by poor oral health. You may already be recommending and offering special diets and premium pet food, but have you considered taking it a step further? Do you also include products that can be added to a pet's drinking water to control pet bad breath? The right product will not only stop halitosis, but also control the bacteria that causes this disease. If a pet owner is willing to rub or brush a special oral gel weekly, there are added benefits. Realistically, most pet owners will not take the time and effort to perform this potentially awkward procedure. The ease of use of a pet oral hygiene solution is normally a more practical approach. Your clients would prefer to purchase these products from you.

2. Pet Odor. Pets, especially dogs, are like magnets for attracting sometimes very unpleasant aromas. As a professional, you have solutions to use in the office setting to keep things sterile and pleasant smelling, but what about something your client can use at home? A home care solution or spray that does not merely cover up, but eliminates odors at the source is a welcome find for pet owners. Pet odors can also be indicative of a more specific problem. What if that strange odor is coming from the pet's ears? Dirt and wax buildup in the outer ear and ear canal might be the problem. A remedy to use at home should be able to gently loosen the wax and both sooth and deodorize. Likewise, for general pet bathing an optimal product would be one that contains no harsh chemicals, but is able to condition and deodorize the pet's coat. When you assist your clients to help their pets look, smell, and even hear better, you will have excellent client loyalty and most likely some referrals.

3. Other Speciality Products. There are a myriad of other products available that can give your practice that added edge and make you stand out from the competition. In addition to premium pet food, offer special nutrition products. Excellent pet antioxidant formulas are available which can produce revitalized energy and help protect from free radicals. There are natural supplements to aid with joint function and mobility. And when that pet is stressed out, you can even offer all natural pet relaxants.

You can be a source of information about all these additional products the pet owner could use. You will make your client happier with more complete advice and service and you will be happier with the added profits to your practice.

Pet Wellness Is Up To You

I can tell a few things about you already, "you love your pets". Your dogs, your cats, your gerbils, your pythons, and your birds. I'm not here to judge you on your choice but your a loving person with lot of compassion. I've put together a few tips in making sure you and your pet have a long life together.

Simple Steps Ensure a Long Life for Your Pet

As a responsible pet owner, you can take a few simple steps that will go a long way toward keeping your pet healthy and happy.

Make your home a safe environment

Unfortunately, making your home pet, as opposed to the outside pet, safe often is a job that is overlooked. We mostly think they will take care of themselves. We made an environment of us but they must be thought of. Pet proofing your home can lower the risk of a serious pet accident occurring. A pet owner needs to be aware of several potential dangers. Poisons in the home that can kill or seriously injure your pet include some kinds of house plants (dieffenbachia, philodendron, hyacinth, and mistletoe), pesticides, and medications. Low electrical cords are extremely hazardous when chewed. Keep harmful objects out of your pet's reach. A little prevention may be just enough to avoid a pet tragedy from happening in your home.

Make sure your pet receives a complete check-up

Just like us "A regular physical is the most overlooked pet health need today," says Dr. Bill Swartz with the American Animal Hospital Association. "Most people only take their pet to a veterinarian when a health problem already exists or for routine vaccinations. Preventive vaccinations and early detection of diseases are the keys to successfully treating your pet," he added. Your veterinarian can conduct a comprehensive exam that includes a lab analysis, heart check, and dental exam.

Perhaps most importantly, design a diet and exercise plan to meet your pet's specific needs

Obesity leads to serious dog and cat health problems such as heart disease. Exercise is important, but a pet will only exercise if there is an incentive to do so. Your veterinarian and you should consider what stage of life your pet is in, the amount of activity your pet enjoys, and the time of year before outlining a specific plan. The right kind of food and physical activity can add to the quality of your pet's life.

Following are ten general pet care tips:

1. Mmm... all that chocolate! None for your pets, please! Chocolate contains a toxic substance, theobromine, which is harmful to pets. So, just say NO!

2. Is it an emergency? A pet exposed to bitter cold that becomes lethargic, depressed, and weak, could be hypothermic. Call your veterinarian immediately.

3. Did you know that by shivering, a pet that is cold or recovering from anesthesia is trying to warm its body back to normal temperature?

4. The sweet, lovely green pool of antifreeze on the driveway is an often deadly drink for dogs and cats. Even a small lick by a small pet is enough to poison it. Clean up those spills fast!

5. Did you know that some caged birds are afraid of the dark? Try a night light or leaving the front of the cage uncovered.

6. Before traveling with your pets, make sure they have all required vaccinations and health papers. If they are on medications, have enough to last through the trip.

7. When traveling by air, be aware of airline restrictions regarding outside temperature and number of animals allowed per flight. Someone may have already booked a pet and there are no more allowed. Check with the airline reservationist or travel agent.

8. Remember that even the most gentle and trusting pet may bite when in pain. If you must muzzle, use a soft towel or cloth strips and remove it as soon as possible so the pet can breathe more easily.

9. If you must transport an injured or ill animal, a blanket, vinyl mat, and even a door make excellent stretchers. The trick is to immobilize the animal to avoid further stress.

10. Moving from a cold climate to a warmer one? Don't forget to have your dog tested for heartworm disease BEFORE beginning preventive medicine. Ask your veterinarian for more information about heartworm disease.

The American Animal Hospital Association asks you to provide a safe environment, quality diet, exercise, and adequate veterinary care for your pet. Consult your veterinarian if you have any questions regarding your pet's health care.

Sick Pets: What Symptoms to Look for to Maintain Optimum Pet Health

Let's look at the role pets play in our lives. We're a very mobile society, I can't imagine growing up as a child without having that furry, four-legged family member. In the internet world we live in, our kids are so high tech that pets help bring them back to high touch. That's why it's so important to have pets in the family.

Studies have shown that it tends to be the woman in the house that is usually the caretaker of pets. They tend to be more intuitive, and they tend to notice if something isn't right with the pet before somebody else might notice, or before it gets so bad that now it's an emergency call to the vet. It's about knowing your pet's health.

A great way to know your pet's health is to give them a checkup, from nose to tail. To do this:

Start with the nose. It's a wives' tale that the nose should be cold and wet. Is the nose dry, cracked, wet? Is there discharge? Is it hard? These are all things to take notice of.
Check the eyes, check the pupils. Are they dilated, pinpoint, unequal? All these things have meaning behind them. The whites of the eyes - are they yellow, red, or white? Is there any kind of discharge or staining? That can tell you something.
Check the ears. If you have ever smelled a yeast infection, you never tend to forget that. Touching your pet improves the human-animal bond.
Then you want to come down the spine. You're checking for any pain, sensitivity, heat.
One of the first things to go is the hair coat. That's something where a groomer is totally on the front line and an advocate for pets out there as well.
Come up and check the ribs, and that's a great place to check for breathing as well.
And then you're going to come down the length of the legs to the paws. It's kind of pulling taffy. You kind of stretch the legs out, and you feel the dew claws, the paws, the pads, the nails.
And then of course pets are symmetric, which means one side is like the other, so we're going to do the other leg, and coming back we're going to do the back two legs the same way we do the front ones.
Then roll your pet over on their back and check their belly. Check the abdominal area, the mammary glands. The abdominal area shouldn't be hard or have any pain response. You want to check the genitals, and the anal area.
And it's called a nose to tail. We end up with the tail.

Cat Health Care - Are You Feeding Your Cat Properly?

In order to promote cat health and as a part of cat health care, a healthy diet for your pet is vital. It is incredibly easy to just buy any old pet food from a pet shop or supermarket but cat owners aren't always aware of what is in the food their cats are eating.

Cats are carnivores so they need a diet of meat. Unlike dogs, cats have no need for grain in their diet and if they are fed it they are at risk of developing diabetes and obesity, which are major problems for cat health care professionals to treat.

In the wild, a cat would normally get most of the water it needs from its prey. This means that pet cats, who don't hunt and who eat dried food will need to drink plenty of water to make up for the dryness of their diet.

Because of their need for plenty of water, it is better to feed cats moist food from either tins or pouches than dried food. Owners who wish to change their cat's diet from dried food to moist food might meet with some resistance from the cat who might not appreciate the change: mixing dried food and moist food with gradually smaller quantities of dried food should overcome this problem.

Once or twice a week it is advisable to feed the cat some raw sardines, herring or mackerel. Don't be tempted to feed tinned tuna though: it is too salty.

A healthy diet is the lynchpin of good cat health care. Being a conscientious owner will save your pet from bad health in the long term, as well as saving hefty vet bills.

Caring For Your Dog's Dental Health

As with any animal, good oral health is crucial to the overall health of your dog. Brushing your dog's teeth regularly will not only prevent bad breath, but could also reduce the risk of serious health concerns, such as abscesses. Worryingly, bacteria from an abscess can quickly travel through the body and affect the heart, kidneys, liver and brain via the bloodstream. Therefore, it is crucial that the dental health of your dog is cared for correctly. Below, are tips on brushing a dog's teeth and other methods of caring for canine dental health.

Effects of Poor Dental Care

Unlike humans, dogs rarely have cavities. Instead, the most common problems in a canine mouth are gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums, and plaque, which is a build-up of bacteria caused by food debris between the teeth and along the gum line. Of course, as mentioned above, this can lead to an abscess, which can have extremely harmful and even fatal effects.

Obviously, brushing, which helps to remove plaque, is the best measure to prevent these potential health problems.

Brushing Your Dog's Teeth

It is advisable to begin brushing a dog's teeth from early puppyhood, partly because it will allow him, or her, to become accustomed to the activity, but also because it is a good idea to be mindful of your dog's dental health from the very beginning.

There are toothbrushes specifically designed for canine use, which you can find in most pet stores. However, a soft bristled child's brush will work equally as effectively. Human toothpaste, however, should never be used for your dog. Canine toothpastes are available from pet stores or your local veterinary's office.

Some dogs are reluctant to allow their teeth to be brushed, hence the need to train them to be handled in this way from a young age. When training your dog, start with small steps, for example opening his, or her, mouth. Be sure to offer lots of praise for allowing you to do this. Then, begin brushing the sides of the teeth, again lots of praise should be awarded. When your dog is comfortable, increase the area and amount of time you spend brushing. If, at any point, your dog becomes distressed, stop and allow him, or her, to calm down before beginning again.

It is a good idea to pay particular attention to your dog's upper back teeth, as these will provide the first sign of plaque build-up.

Dental Care Treats

Crunchy treats, and those specifically designed to improve the dental health of your dog, are great for removing food from between the teeth and leaving gums healthy. Typically, crunchy foods are better for your dog's dental health then soft, canned or pouched, foods, so you may like to add a mixer to wet food. Alternatively, ensure that your canine companion has a crunchy treat after every meal.

Prophylaxis

Prophylaxis is a thorough cleaning that is done under anesthetic. A veterinarian will take X-rays, examine each tooth carefully and remove any abscessed or infected ones. Then, the teeth and gums are meticulously cleaned.

This treatment may be necessary when you adopt a rescued dog, as their dental health is often poorly cared for. In addition, older dogs are likely to experience problems with their teeth and gums and may need prophylaxis. However, as prophylaxis requires an anesthetic, and anesthetic always carries risk, it should not be used as an alternative to regular brushing and dental care in the home.

Although your dog may not enjoy it, it is crucial that you clean his, or her, teeth regularly. If you are having difficulties with training your dog to accept brushing, seek the assistance of a veterinarian or an obedience trainer.
